Yes folks, we’ve reached a new low in the Democratic Mayor of Roanoke, Va. David A. Bower, who cites Japanese internment as support for his call to deny Syrian refugees the opportunity to resettle in the US:
I’m reminded that President Franklin D. Roosevelt felt compelled to sequester Japanese foreign nationals after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and it appears that the threat of harm to America from [Islamic State] now is just as real and serious as that from our enemies then.
Nothing quite like turning to one of our nation’s dark chapters as support for an argument. The mass detention of Japanese Americans during World War II was a horrific thing, a mass of hysteria resulted in forced relocation and internment of families (not the first time America did this, of course).
As a kid I knew a number of people who were kids when their families were relocated or who were born in those camps. They were scarred by the experience. It was a decision that compromised our principles and demonized an entire population of Americans. We should renounce such actions not cite them as an example.
Democratic Mayor David A. Bower of Roanoke, Va. Today’s worst and most hateful person in the world.
