I admit to being a news junkie, but I wish we could turn back the clock and opt not to have 24 hour news channels.
In a desire to fill space and get ratings, they seek the sensational and hype even the smallest incidents. There is very little coverage of peaceful protests, but all out coverage when violence occurs.
On Saturday CNN spent the whole day focusing on the White House Correspondents Dinner and no time discussing the simmering but peaceful protests Baltimore. Today, while showing footage covering a few blocks of the city, Wolf Blitzer declares “the city is on fire.” He condemns the mayor and the police for doing nothing while ignoring the fact that the FBI reports a rumored allegiance among 3 known gangs who have threatened to kill cops as a credible threat.
Tonight they show fires but can’t say if they’re related to the “rioting.”
It seems a gathering of more than 10 African Americans constitutes a riot according to CNN.
This isn’t to say there haven’t been criminal actions in Baltimore. A young man died after his spine was severed while he was in police custody.
MSNBC is better, but not much. Oh, and what about that devastating earthquake in Nepal? Old news. Sure, the death toll continues to rise, but we’ll get back to that once we stop hyping the “chaos” in Baltimore.
This isn’t new(s); the media covered outrage in Ferguson in much the same way.
Yes, we have serious problems we need to address in this country, many more than I can begin to list here. And we need serious coverage of and conversations about these problems. Instead we have 21st century carnival barkers on the TV.
To quote Green Day:
Don’t want to be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It’s calling out to idiot America.
